Atlantic + Gulf · MILE MARKER / CORAL CHAIN

Florida Keys & Key West

The Keys are a chain, not a single beach town. Move by mile marker, leave room for bridges and weather, and understand Key West as a city rather than the whole archipelago.

CONCEPTUAL REGIONAL COLLAGE

A 113-mile island road through coral, mangrove, working harbors, refuge, and the independent end-of-the-road city of Key West.

It supplies Florida’s most singular road journey, coral-reef ecology, island communities, and a literal southern terminus.

01 / FOR THE VISITOR

The surprise

The archipelago is a sequence of working communities and fragile habitats, not 113 miles of one continuous resort.

02 / FOR DAILY LIFE

The resident lens

Fresh water, reef health, storm evacuation, workforce housing, and the single highway make island interdependence visible every day.

03 / THE LOCAL CODE

Three rituals

  • Use mile markers as real orientation
  • Never rush the Overseas Highway
  • Give wildlife and coral distance

BUILD A FIRST DAY

One route.
Four decisions.

Use this as a sequence, not a checklist. Conditions, distances, and local time matter more than collecting pins.

  1. 08:00
    STOP 01

    Start by mile marker

Name the Upper, Middle, or Lower Keys chapter you are in before making promises farther down the road.

  2. 10:00
    STOP 02

    Enter the water carefully

Choose reef, mangrove, fishing, or refuge activity by conditions and a responsible local operator.

  3. 15:00
    STOP 03

    Leave white space

Allow the bridge drive, a wildlife stop, or a weather pause to be part of the route rather than a delay.

  4. 19:30
    STOP 04

    Arrive at the terminus

In Key West, park the car and let historic streets, harbor light, and an independent island city take over.

THE ANCHORS

Four ways into the region.

  3. 03National Key Deer Refuge
  4. 04Historic Key West

TASTE THE REGION

Order with a sense of place.

  • Conch traditions
  • Dock-to-table fish

STAY BY INTENTION

Your base changes
the whole trip.

Drive the chain once, then walk, bike, or use local transit where practical. Never schedule a same-day mainland flight too tightly after a Keys drive.

01

For reef access

Key Largo and the Upper Keys shorten the drive from the mainland and center dive operations.

02

For a middle-islands base

Islamorada and Marathon balance water access with room for day trips in both directions.

03

For culture and nights

Key West works best as a walkable destination, after the road journey rather than during it.

BEFORE YOU GO OR SETTLE IN

Know the local rhythm.

Winter is dry and crowded. Summer brings warm water, lower rates, heat, and tropical-weather awareness; lobster mini-season changes the rhythm.

  • The Overseas Highway is the only road through most of the chain; delays have no shortcut.
  • Fresh water, reef health, and storm resilience are daily island realities.
  • Wild Key deer and other wildlife need distance and slow driving.
